WBB Holds Off DePaul, 74-73

MILWAUKEE – Wednesday night's contest was a tail of two halves as Marquette built up a 22-point lead at the first half before staving off a furious DePaul rally in the second half to grab its third-game in a row with a 74-73 win over the Blue Demons at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles shot 64.6% from the field, nearly 30% better than DePaul, but attempted less than 30 shots due to a season-high 24 turnovers and allowing 19 offensive rebounds.
Marquette had four players in double figures led by Halle Vice who finished with 18 points to go 14 rebounds.
Jaidynn Mason was in attack mode early and often throughout the first quarter, scoring 10 of Marquette's 26 points as the Golden Eagles led by 11 after 10 minutes. The junior was 5-of-6 in the quarter with all 10 points coming at the bucket.
Midway through the second, MU doubled its lead through a 12-2 run with four Golden Eagles contributing. Marquette shot 36.3% better than the Blue Demons in the opening half and led 49-27.
The game began to turn during the the third quarter as DePaul turned up its defensive pressure. With seven minutes to go, DePaul went on a 12-2 run over four minutes to pull within 12 at 55-43. Marquette's advantage stood at 12 through the end of the quarter. After scoring the four points of the fourth, MU saw the Blue Demons score 11 unanswered after a string of three straight triples.
Behind 18 MU second-half turnovers that led to 19 points, DePaul pulled to within two with less than two minutes. Vice pushed it back up to as Oliva Porter slipped a pass into the paint to her through outstretched arms. The Golden Eagles saw out the remaining 90 seconds going 3-of-4 from throw line. Mason knocked down a pair with nine seconds go to ice the game.
