MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University volleyball team (11-6, 6-1 BIG EAST) swept away St. John's (15-5, 5-2 BIG EAST) in three sets Friday evening at Carnesecca Arena.
Carson Tyler led all players with 16 kills and added seven digs, while Tani Juric contributed nine kills and four blocks in Marquette's balanced offensive effort. Luanna Markus orchestrated the attack with 38 assists while adding five digs and three blocks, and libero Emi Juric posted a match-high 20 digs to anchor the Golden Eagles defensively. Molly Welge chipped in seven kills on a team-best .462 hitting percentage and added three blocks as Marquette hit .209 for the match. The Golden Eagles also controlled play at the net and from the service line, matching St. John's with eight team blocks and finishing with a 6-3 advantage in aces while holding the Red Storm to a .048 hitting percentage.
Marquette erased a three-point deficit midway through the opening set and closed on a 12-4 run to take control. After trailing 13-10, the Golden Eagles used a 6-1 surge fueled by a block from Tani Juric and Molly Welge, a St. John's attack error and another Red Storm miscue to move ahead 16-15. The teams were tied as late as 18-18 before Marquette scored seven of the final eight points, getting consecutive kills from Carson Tyler, a solo block from Julia Stanev, a kill from Luanna Markus and a set-clinching ace from Welge to secure a 25-19 first-set victory.
Marquette seized control early in the second set and never allowed St. John's to mount a serious challenge. The Golden Eagles scored four of the first five points behind a pair of blocks from Tani Juric and Julia Stanev, then extended the lead to 8-3 on an Allie Beers service ace. Marquette continued to pressure the Red Storm with strong defense and efficient offense, forcing 10 St. John's attack errors while Carson Tyler and Juric paced the attack. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 11 points and closed out the set with a Tyler kill, securing a 25-14 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Marquette appeared poised to finish off the sweep after building a 14-8 advantage in the third set, using a 7-1 run highlighted by a Luanna Markus service ace, a pair of Carson Tyler kills and several St. John's attacking errors. The Red Storm answered with a 12-6 stretch to tie the frame at 20-20 before the teams traded points down the stretch. An Emi Juric service ace gave Marquette a 24-22 lead and match point, but St. John's fought off both opportunities to even the set at 24-24. Tani Juric responded with a kill to restore match point, and Emma Parks delivered the decisive kill off a Markus assist as the Golden Eagles secured the sweep with a 26-24 third-set victory.
