Women's Tennis Swept by no. 31 Indiana, 7-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Marquette women's tennis team was swept, 7-0, by no. 31 Indiana at the Indiana Tennis Center Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles end the weekend with their second consecutive loss and fall to 2-5 in dual action on the season.

The Golden Eagles picked up one win in doubles competition where, the duo of junior Dominika Dabrowski and freshman Robin Metzler defeated Marah Calvo and Cecile Perton, 8-7, in a tightly-contested match that ended in a tiebreaker set. However, Marquette was unable to capture another doubles victory. At no. 1 doubles, sophomore Maria Calbeto and freshman Lauren Little were defeated by no. 32 Sarah Batty and Laura McGaffigan, 8-2, and at the no. 2 slot sophomore Erin Watkins and junior Francina Bonnelly were downed by Sigrid Fischer and Brianna Williams, 8-4.

Marquette had no success in singles play. Fischer quickly downed Bonnelly at no. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0 to help Indiana win its first singles match of the day. Indiana's Alba Berdala tallied the same result over Dabrowski at no. 4 singles. Watkins was topped by Hoosier Williams 6-2, 6-2 at no. 3 singles and Metzler was defeated at the sixth position, 6-3, 6-1.

Calbeto battled, taking the second set from McGaffigan, but fell short as McGaffigan defeated Calbeto, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0. In another hard fought match at no. 1 singles, Little was taken down by Batty, 6-3. 6-4.

The Golden Eagles will return to the Helfaer Tennis Stadium to host Wisconsin on Friday, February 17, at 3:30 p.m.
