The Golden Eagles benefitted from an 11-under-par finale to get into contention
ERIN, Wis. -- Hunter Eichhorn's final round 67 moved him to a 6-under-par 210 and a third place finish, as Marquette's 11-under-par team round gave the Golden Eagles a third place finish in the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills.
Northwestern shot a 12-under-par second round to finish at a 6-under-par 858 for the event and claim the team win, the second Marquette Intercollegiate victory for the Wildcats (first since 2016). Ryan Lumsden's 8-under-par 208 (73-68-67) gave him the medalist honor for 2018, as he finished a shot ahead of Arizona State's Alex del Rey, and two strokes in front of Eichhorn.
Marquette, which entered the event receiving votes in the latest GCAA/Bushnell Top 25 poll, was in search of its third straight victory - the Golden Eagles won both the Northern Intercollegiate and Windon Memorial Classic entering the sixth annual Marquette Intercollegiate.
Eichhorn went 5-under-par in a bogey-free final round - he bogeyed on only one of his last 31 holes of the tournament, making eight birdies over that stretch, and a field-best 38 pars in the tournament.
Oliver Farrell grabbed his third top 10 finish of the season, placing eighth with a 2-under-par finale and 1-under-par 215 in the tournament (71-74-70). His 14 tournament birdies were third-most in the field.
Scoring conditions on Tuesday improved dramatically with the clearing of the weather - seven teams shot under par in the final round, while the average score fell three-and-a-half strokes to 72.90 from Monday's 76.40. Rain and wind marked play at Erin Hills over the tournament's first two rounds.
The Golden Eagles are off until closing their fall season Oct. 14 and 15 at the Chatham Hills Collegiate, hosted by Indiana.
