The Golden Eagles will have a short break before resuming fall action
EVANSTON, Ill.-- The Marquette women's tennis team concluded its third consecutive weekend of action at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University. Competition saw play in both doubles and singles matches over the three-day tournament.
Senior Fleur Eggink worked her way through the singles A Draw after dropping her opening match on Friday. She rebounded with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Penn State and won the consolation draw as the player from EIU had to withdraw.Â
In the B Draw senior Milica Novakovic claimed a swift 6-2, 6-2 win in the opener over Penn State's Olivia Ryan.
Like Eggink, Natalija Popovic played stellar on the consolation side of the C Draw earning wins over EIU (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) and CSU (6-1, 6-0) to win the left side of the bracket and freshman Giula Turconi did the same in the D Draw. Turconi won 6-2, 6-1 over EIU, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Miami Ohio.
Lesley Foe opened singles play with a come-from-behind win over Seira Shimuzu from Purdue, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 before dropping her second match, while freshman Elizabeth Ferdman defeated Lewis, 6-2, 603 in her first singles match.Â
In the G Draw, Isabella Franks toppled Lewis, 6-0, 6-2 in the opening match.
In doubles play, Popovic and Foe teamed on the court and cruised through the A Draw with three victories, including the 6-3 win over CSU to reach the A Draw final. Eggink and Turconi dropped their opening match, but rebounded with a pair of 7-5 wins over two opponents before a 7-5 victory over JMU gave the duo the A Draw consolation title.
In the B Draw, Novakovic and Franks had the same fortune as the tandem earned the B Draw consolation topping CSU, Lewis and Colorado in a 6-2 decision for the final match.
The success in Evanston will stick with the Golden Eagles until the ITA Midwest Regional which is slated to begin on Oct. 17 in East Lansing, Mich.
