LAKE FOREST, Illinois – Marquette University junior Hunter Eichhorn claimed co-medalist honors at the Windon Memorial Classic on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-under-par 207 (65-66-76) at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Eichhorn's victory is the third of his career and first since he won the BIG EAST Championship as a freshman in 2018. He shot a 5-over 76 on the day and tied with USF's Albin Bergstrom, who birdied the 17th and 18th holes to finish with a 2-under 69.
"To hang on and finish T-1 and get a medalist honor is something special and I have nothing to hang my head about today," Eichhorn said.
The Carney, Michigan native's 207 is tied for the second-best 54-hole score of his career and is the 12th-best total in Windon Memorial Classic history. The tournament's past winners and runners-up include Casey Martin, Luke Donald, Tiger Woods, Hunter Mahan and Scott Harington.
The defending tournament champion Golden Eagles (282-287-286—855) used sub-par rounds from sophomore Tyler Leach (4-under 67) and senior Matt Murlick (1-under 70) to finish in a tie for fourth place with Kansas and UNLV. Notre Dame won the event with a 10-under-par 842.
"I was proud of the way the guys embraced the course conditions and I think overall weren't trying to go out to try and make a lot of birdies," Marquette head coach Steve Bailey said. "They were just trying to make good pars, and I think for the most part we did that. Actually on counters I don't think they had a double bogey today and I was proud of that."
Leach (72-72-67—211) recorded a bogey-free round, which included back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16 and birdied the ninth before making the turn.
Murlick (71-74-70—215) recorded birdies on three of his final five holes and did not card a bogey on the back nine.
