Katrina Wetherell nets golden goal in 98th minute
Redshirt junior Katrina Wetherell netted the golden goal in the 98th minute, heading home a Rachel Johnson corner to deliver MU its fourth BIG EAST win of the season.
It was a high-scoring game from start to finish, as Marquette struck first in the match within the first ten minutes. That time, it was Johnson finishing a corner from Wetherell to open the scoring and bring MU to a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, Madison Burrier sent a ball into the box for the Golden Eagles, which somehow found its way past the keeper to give MU a 2-0 edge.
St. John's tightened the deficit in the first half with a goal from Isabelle Aviza, but Marquette was not done in the frame as Alyssa Bombacino added to the Golden Eagle lead in the 45th minute. The redshirt junior midfielder took multiple dribbles and fired a laser past the SJU goalie to give her side a 3-1 lead at the half.
The Johnnies scored the lone goals of the second half, beating MU goalie Mikki Easter in the 69th and 88th minutes to force overtime.
After seven minutes of the extra period, Marquette earned a corner and its All-BIG EAST midfielder delivered a game-winning goal.
Five players earned points for Marquette, with Wetherell and Johnson each notching a goal and assist, while Kylie Sprecher added an assist on the Burrier goal. Easter made six saves in net for the Golden Eagles.
For St. John's, three different players found the back of the net, and three others put up an assist. SJU keeper Naya Lipkins faced 12 shots and made four saves.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles play their final road contest of the year, heading to Xavier for a matchup on Sunday.
