Golden Eagles suffer first loss of conference play
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Marquette women's basketball team (8-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) suffered its first loss of BIG EAST play Sunday afternoon, falling to Seton Hall, 69-57.Â
Despite playing from behind through most of the contest, Marquette kept the game close though three quarters. MU entered the final period trailing 51-48, when the Pirates (5-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) found their offensive rhythm to go on a 16-0 run.Â
Graduate guard Karissa McLaughlin had her highest-scoring game in a Marquette uniform, finishing with 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor and 6-of-10 shooting from outside the arc to lead all scorers.Â
Seton Hall was led by Lauren Park-Lane, who finished with team-highs of 25 points and eight assists.

Seton Hall used a 16-0 run in the fourth to gain separation after three close quarters.

MU shot 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the field, its second-lowest shooting percentage of the season. Additionally, Marquette shot 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from 3-point range and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line.Â

Karissa McLaughlin finished with a season-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor and 6-of-10 shooting from outside the arc.Â

This was McLaughlin's 16th-career 20+ point game, and her fourth of the season.

Liza Karlen recorded the second double-double of her career, going for 11 points and 10 boards.

With seven rebounds in the contest, Lauren Van Kleunen moved up a spot on Marquette's all-time career rebounding leaderboard to 14th. She passed Tammy Shain (1988-92), and now has 660.Â

Led by Karlen's 10 boards, Marquette won the rebounding battle, 39-37. It has now outrebounded 10 of its 11 opponents this season.Â

With the loss, Marquette is now 29-10 in BIG EAST play and 20-10 in road contests under Coach Duffy.

Marquette is now 16-10 all-time against Seton Hall.
 
UP NEXT: Marquette will return home to play its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 22, against Cincinnati (6-4, 0-0 AAC) at the Al McGuire Center. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on FloHoops.
