MILWAUKEEÂ - The Marquette University men's lacrosse team fell to Villanova, 16-14, in its second BIG EAST Conference match-up on Saturday at Valley Fields.Â
The Golden Eagles (0-2, 0-2 BIG EAST) never trailed by more than three goals and were able to tie the game at 14 on freshman Russell Melendez's unassisted score with 9:37 remaining. The Wildcats (1-1, 1-1 BIG EAST) scored the game's final two goals for the final tally.
Corey McManus and Matt Campbell got the scoring started for Villanova, but the Golden Eagles quickly responded with two goals to tie the contest, 2-2, early in the second quarter. MU found the net six more times during the frame and went into the halftime break trailing, 9-8.
Each squad posted four scores in the third quarter, while Villanova scored three times in the fourth.
Redshirt freshman Devon Cowan led the Golden Eagles with four goals and two assists. Connor McClelland, Griffin Fleming and Melendez each contributed a pair and redshirt junior goalie Gabe Stein collected 12 saves in the second half.Â
For Villanova, Campbell found the net four times in the first half and once in the second. Keegan Khan added three goals and three assists, while McManus contributed two goals. Goalie Will Vitton had seven saves.
Marquette now prepares for its third BIG EAST match-up against No. 5-ranked Georgetown on Saturday March 6 at 11 a.m. Central in Washington, D.C.Â
