WSOC Hangs On For 4-3 Win Over CMU In Opener

Wetherell nets pair of goals in win
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-0-0) opened the 2021 campaign with a 4-3 victory over Central Michigan (0-1-0) on Thursday night in non-conference action at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles' offensive attack was on the move early and often in the first half, netting four goals prior to intermission. Forward Alex Campana opened the scoring just five minutes into the game and minutes after checking into the match midfielder Katrina Wetherell scored two goals in a span of 13 minutes.
Freshman Maggie Starker, who assisted on Wetherell's first goal, netted one of her own at the 39:54 mark for her first career score and a 4-0 advantage.
The Chippewas battled back in the second half, however, scoring three goals in under 20 minutes to close the gap to 4-3 at the 70:52 mark. CMU converted on a pair of penalty kicks to conclude its scoring.
Marquette returns to action on Sunday, August 29 when the team hosts Notre Dame at 12 p.m. CT.
