Marquette Heads on the Road to Take on Seton Hall
The Marquette University men's soccer team (3-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) travels to Newark, New Jersey this weekend for its first road contest of BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles will take on reigning BIG EAST champion Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. CT at Owen T. Carroll Field.
After winning its first BIG EAST Tournament championship since 1991 in the spring, Seton Hall was picked to finish second in the Preseason Coaches' Poll, narrowly behind Georgetown. The Pirates finished last season ranked No. 9 in the nation with a 10-2-4 record, and carried that success into the postseason, where they made it to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships.
Seton Hall is coached by Andreas Lindberg, who is in his fourth season with the program. Junior defender Johannes Pex leads the squad in scoring with three goals, while also leading the team and ranking fourth in the nation with five assists. In the net, the Pirates are led by graduate goalkeeper Andreas Nota, who has started six of the team's seven contests while making 23 saves and allowing 11 goals.
Hallwood Ranks Among Conference's Elite in Net
MU redshirt junior goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood has proven himself as one of the league's top netminders through the young season. The Halifax, England, native currently ranks fourth among BIG EAST keepers in total saves with 20, and has spent 647 minutes in net, third in the league. Hallwood's top statistical game this season came at Tulsa, where he posted six saves with a 0.857 save percentage.
Golden Eagles Hope to Replicate Spring Success in BIG EAST Play
The Spring 2021 season was a historic one for Marquette, headlined by a 5-1-1 mark in conference play, the program's best-ever league record. After opening BIG EAST play with a 2-1 double overtime loss to Creighton, the Golden Eagles rattled off six-straight unbeaten matches to head into post season play.
Now in a season in which MU was picked to finish fifth in the pre-season poll, the team looks to replicate that conference play success in the fall. Marquette will face each of the league's 10 squads this year, in a regular season which concludes at home against top-ranked Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 30. The BIG EAST Championship this season will begin with the quarterfinal round on Saturday, Nov. 6, and will conclude with the title game on Sunday, Nov. 14.
Series History
All-time, MU has a record of 6-6-3 against Seton Hall. The Pirates have won each of the previous three contests. Though the teams did not meet up during the Spring 2021 regular season, they faced off in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals in Washington, D.C., a 4-1 win for Seton Hall.
