MU finds itself in 14-team field in Myrtle Beach
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team continues its spring season on March 14-15 with a trip to Surf Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the Bash at the Beach.
Â
THE EVENT
MU finds itself in a 14-team field alongside Delaware, Long Island, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Penn, Radford, Rhode Island, Rider, Troy, St. Francis (Pa.), UConn, UMES and tournament-host Appalachian State.
Â
Former NBA player J.R. Smith will be participating in the event for North Carolina A&T. Smith played 16 seasons and spent time with the Hornets, Nuggets, Knicks, Cavaliers and Lakers. He was a two-time NBA champion and was also named Sixth Man of the Year in 2013.
Â
THE COURSE
Designed by George Cobb, the 18-hole, par-72 course utilizes 200 acres of gently contoured terrain to complement its scenic setting. The course features greens that were converted from Bentgrass to Champion Bermudagrass by John Lafoy in 2016.
Â
The Surf Club features four sets of tee boxes, with the longest playing at 6,709 yards. Precision is vital, as the course rewards placement rather than raw power.
Â
After a front nine that includes a demanding stretch from holes 2-5, the back nine opens with a par-5, 554-yard hole that features water looming on the dogleg left. Players are required to determine how much risk they are willing to take to shorten the hole.
Â
THE LINEUP
Nos. 1-5: Hunter Eichhorn, Max Lyons, Tyler Leach, Aidan Lafferty, Nicolás Evangelio
INDIVIDUAL: Josh Robinson, Aidan Lafferty, Patrick AdlerÂ
Eichhorn set a new MU and event 18-hole record with an 11-under par 61 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 15. The mark broke the tournament's previous all-time low round which was previously held by Oklahoma's Patrick Welch, who tallied an opening round 10-under 62 on Feb. 13. Future PGA Tour pros Stewart Cink, Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar, Justin Leonard and Bubba Watson are all alumni of the event, which began in 1993. Â
The performance marked the graduate student's 18th top-10 finish of his Marquette career, the fourth top-10 finish in the last five events (including The Patriot All-America in Dec.), the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in MU history (203) and the fourth-lowest 54-hole score vs. par in MU history (-13).Â
Eichhorn was also named BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week on Feb. 17 for the ninth time in his career.Â
After leading the Golden Eagles' lineup in each of the first two events in the fall, freshman Max Lyons continued his stellar play, shooting at least 2-under-par in each round of the Puerto Rico Classic with a best mark of 5-under 67 on Feb. 14.Â
Evangelio was the third MU player to finish the event at par-or-better, shooting an even-par 216 for the tournament. He shot under par in the first and third rounds.Â
Â
UP NEXT
The Golden Eagles return to action on March 28-29 when they travel to Palm City, Florida, for the University of Houston's Valspar Collegiate at Floridian Golf Club.
