MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team continues its spring campaign on April 3-5 in The Calusa Cup at Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
Â
THE EVENT
The Golden Eagles will compete in a nine-team field alongside No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 8 Georgia, No. 11 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Florida, No. 17 Wake Forest, No. 22 Clemson, No. 23 Purdue and tournament-host Iowa.
Â
Teams will begin teeing off at 11:30 a.m. Central time on April 3 and April 4 before teeing off at 7 a.m. CT in the third and final round on April 5. There will be 10-minute intervals between tee times in all three rounds.
Â
Marquette placed ninth as a team in its most recent appearance in the event in 2021.
Â
THE COURSE
Designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, Calusa Pines is ranked 74th on Golf Digest's list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses of 2021-22.
Â
The 18-hole, par-72 course plays at 7,320 yards and features ridge lines up to 58 feet, mature oaks, pines and sabal palms and some of the firmest, fastest Bermuda fairways and greens in the state.
Â
Calusa Pines also sports a variety of scenic, long-range views after a recent removal of overgrown vegetation that has also made the course more playable.
Â
Holes of note include the third, which features a small green surrounded by deep bunkers on one side and a steep fall-off on the other, and the 16th, which is a peninsula. The fifth hole is also unique, as it features an elevated green surrounded by sand and slopes.
Â
With Calusa Pines being one of the premier courses in the country, Paul Azinger, Steve Stricker, Rocco Mediate and Stewart Cink are all members, among other tour pros.
Â
THE LINEUP
Nos. 1-5: Hunter Eichhorn, Nicolás Evangelio, Max Lyons, Tyler Leach, Josh Robinson
Â
Eichhorn finished at 2-over par (70-75-70—215) in the Valspar Collegiate to tie for 37th alongside Evangelio. The graduate student was one of two Marquette golfers to finish under par in the third round thanks in part to an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.
Â
Evangelio got off to a stellar start and was tied for 11th through the first 36 holes of action. He tallied a 5-under 66 and posted eight birdies in the opening round before shooting an even-par 71 in the second.
Â
Robinson had a fantastic third round at the Valspar Collegiate, carding a 4-under 67, the lowest score of his collegiate career. He also notched his first hole-in-one in competition on the par-3 eighth hole. It was the first hole-in-one by an MU golfer since Oliver Farrell delivered one on May 14, 2019 in the NCAA Austin Regional.
Eichhorn led MU at last year's Calusa Cup in a tie for 29th, while Evangelio tied for 36th.
Â
UP NEXT
MU will cap its regular season on April 18-19 with a trip to Villanova, Pennsylvania, for the Wildcat Spring Invitational at Radnor Valley Country Club.
