Lamotte and Garcia combine for nine goals as MU hands Canisius its first loss
NIAGARA, N.Y. — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (3-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) earned a 14-9 road win over Canisius Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Golden Eagles were able to hand Canisius its first loss of the season behind strong offensive performances from graduate attacker Kyra LaMotte and senior attacker Shea Garcia, each posting hat tricks in the contest.
The Golden Griffins struck first with an early goal, but Marquette fired back with three-straight goals including two from LaMotte. Garcia connected on a free position shot with just second remaining in the second quarter to make it a 5-5 contest at the half.
Despite being out-shot in the first half 22-13, Amanda Rumsey made 10 saves for the Golden Eagles to keep things even at the midway point.
After three closely-contested quarters, Marquette was able to gain separation as it scored three times in the first four minutes of the fourth to take a 10-6 advantage. The Golden Griffins responded with back-to-back scores, when the duo of Smigiel and Mary Schumar quickly struck back with goals scored just seven seconds apart.
LaMotte finished with five goals and an assist, her second-straight five-goal game, while Garcia had four goals and an assist on the day for her fourth hat trick of the season.
A pair of freshmen chipped in with goals as Elise Smigiel went for the third and fourth goals of her career, while Meg Bireley netted her fourth as well.
Rumsey played all 60 minutes in net for MU, totaling 12 saves with a .571 save percentage
Canisius (4-1, 0-0 MAAC) was led by Caroline Netti, who finished with three goals in the contest.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will remain in New York as they travel to face Niagara on Sunday, March 6, at Niagara Field. First draw is set for 10 a.m. (CT), and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available on GoMarquette.com.
