Marquette earns No. 5 seed in BIG EAST tourney, will face Creighton Thursday
The Marquette University men's basketball team (19-11, 11-8 BIG EAST) closed its regular season with an 85-77 win over St. John's (16-14, 8-11 BIG EAST) Saturday night on Al's Night/Senior Night.
With the victory, Marquette earned the No. 5 seed in the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep and will face No. 4 seed Creighton on Thursday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. CT in the quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden.
Forward Justin Lewis led the Golden Eagles with 28 points and seven rebounds. Guard Darryl Morsell added 21 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Kur Kuath finished with 12 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-6 shooting.

Morsell sunk three free throws over the final 29.7 seconds to secure the victory. Although SJ brought things within two in the second half, Marquette never trailed for the final 20 minutes of action.

The Golden Eagles led 42-35 at the break thanks to 17 points from Lewis and 13 points from Morsell on 6-of-10 shooting. The Golden Eagles shot 48.5 percent from the field as a team through the first 20 minutes of action and ran a fast-paced offense, scoring 19 fastbreak points compared to the Red Storm's 10.

- Prior to the game, seniors Greg Elliott, Darryl Morsell and Kur Kuath were all honored as part of the Senior Night celebration.
- With Saturday's win, Marquette is now 24-16 all-time against SJ and has taken four of the last six meetings between both teams.
- MU started the game on a 10-0 run, holding St. John's scoreless until the 17:27 mark in the first half.
- With just over nine minutes left until halftime, Justin Lewis rattled off nine straight points to give the Golden Eagles a 29-19 advantage.
- Lewis' 28-point performance marked his eighth performance of at least 20 points this season.
- Starters did the bulk of the work on the evening, scoring 68 of MU's 85 points.
