VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania – The Marquette University men's golf team closed out its regular season on Tuesday afternoon with a team championship in the Wildcat Spring Invitational at Radnor Valley Country Club, while graduate student Hunter Eichhorn claimed medalist honors for the sixth time in his career.
The Golden Eagles posted a combined 36-hole score of 6-over-par 566 (281-285), topping runner-up Long Island University by 16 strokes. Fellow BIG EAST Conference schools St. John's and tournament-host Villanova finished tied for third and eighth, respectively. Â
Eichhorn entered the day at 2-under, tied with Delaware's Sahasawat Ariyachatvakin, and one stroke behind Lehigh's David Hurly after shooting an opening-round 68 on Monday. The Carney, Michigan native notched five birdies in his second round to win the event by one stroke over Ariyachatvakin.
Eichhorn led by two strokes entering No. 16, but recorded a double-bogey on the par-3 to pull back into a tie at 2-under for the tournament. The graduate student prevailed with a birdie on the par-4 17th hole to retake the lead and closed out the tournament with a par on No. 18.
The reigning-BIG EAST Player of the Week rolls into next week's conference tournament with rounds of par-or-better in 22 of the 29 rounds he's competed in this year and five top-10 finishes. Eichhorn was the lone individual competing at Radnor Valley in Golfstat's top 100.
Redshirt junior Tyler Leach recorded his best finish of the year with a 1-under 139 (69-70) to place third behind Eichhorn and Ariyachatvakin. He opened his day with a birdie on the par-4 first hole and added a second at the turn on No. 10. Those two offset a pair of bogeys on Nos. 5 and 16.
Freshman Max Lyons joined Eichhorn and Leach in the top 10 with a 4-over 144 after a final round 73 on Tuesday.Â
The team win marks MU's first event team victory since the 2019 BIG EAST Championships at Callawassie Island.
