Golden Eagles conclude homestand Thursday vs. St. Thomas
MILWAUKEE – The No. 8/7 Marquette University men's basketball team defeated Notre Dame, 78-59, on Saturday night at Fiserv Forum.Â
Marquette stymied Notre Dame's offense in the first half; limiting them to 9-of-24 from the field.Â
Tyler Kolek and Oso Ighodaro led the Golden Eagles' offensively. Ighodaro finished with 20 points and Tyler Kolek finished with 17 points and six assists.Â
Notre Dame was led by guard Markus Burton tonight, Burton had 20 points and four steals.Â
Notables:
- Marquette has now won 16-straight home games dating back to last season
- Tonight's game marked the 120th all-time meeting in a series that dates back to the 1919-20 campaign. Marquette has only faced DePaul (133) and Wisconsin (130) more times than Notre Dame.Â
- Marquette guard Stevie Mitchell (hamstring) missed the game and sophomore guard Chase Ross made his first start.
- Ross had a career best of eight rebounds tonight.
- MU's starting lineup was just its third different since the last game of the 2021-22 season. Marquette was one of just three teams (Marshall and San Jose State) in 2022-23 to feature same starting five every game.
- Sold-out crowd of 17,519 is seventh largest at Fiserv Forum
- Marquette held Notre Dame scoreless until the 13:00 mark in the first period and opened the game with 10-straight stops
- Oso Ighodaro was perfect (8-of-8) from the free throw line tonight.Â
- Marquette had 30 points off of turnovers and 40 points scored in the paint.Â
