DAVIS, California — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (5-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) picked up a road win Sunday afternoon at UC Davis Health Stadium, taking down UC Davis (4-2) 19-17.Â
In what was a meeting between two of the top-10 goal scoring offenses in the nation, the Golden Eagles pounced early and often, getting off to a quick 3-0 lead just four minutes in. UC Davis responded though, as they bounced back to eventually even things at 5-5 early in the second quarter. The teams then went back-and-forth until the half, UC Davis taking a 10-9 lead at the break.Â
After a scoreless 7:30 from both sides to open the second half, Marquette rattled off three goals in just over two minutes and went on to outscore the Aggies 5-0 in the quarter. MU held a comfortable lead through most of the remainder of the contest, though UC Davis closed the game with three-straight goals to narrow the gap.Â
Senior attacker Mary Schumar was once again outstanding for the Golden Eagles, going for four goals and five assists to total nine points, tied for third-most in a single game in program history.Â
Three other Marquette players earned hat tricks, Leigh Steiner and Lydia Foust each finishing with four goals, Shea Garcia finishing with three. Steiner added a season-high four draw controls to go along with her career-high four goals.Â
Marquette out-shot UC Davis 40-31, with 28 of its shots coming on goal. Only one of MU's 19 goals came from the free position, on its only free position attempt of the afternoon.
In net for MU, sophomore Brynna Nixon played all 60 minutes and recorded six saves. Ellie Henry led the team's efforts on the draw with six draw controls.Â
Grace Gebhardt led the Aggies with six goals and an assist on the afternoon.Â
