
Golf Travels to South Carolina for 2023 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship

MU enters as the No. 1 seed
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team tees it up at Riverton Pointe Country Club in Hardeeville, South Carolina on April 28-30 for the 2023 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship Presented by Jeep.Â
THE EVENT
The Golden Eagles look to claim their fifth conference title after winning the conference championships in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019. MU has taken second place the last two seasons, most recently finishing three strokes behind Seton Hall in 2022.
The first round is set to begin on Friday, April 27 at 7 a.m. CT with the final round concluding on Sunday, April 30. There will be live video coverage of all three rounds provided by GolfKast. There will be coverage of select holes and one mobile camera. Live scoring will also be available on Golfstat.
The event's team champion and individual medalist earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Championships on May 15-17. The NCAA will announce the tournament field for the 2023 NCAA Men's Golf Championships on Wednesday, May 3 at 12 p.m. CT on the Golf Channel.
THE COURSE
Riverton Pointe is a par 72 that can stretch more than 7,300 yards. The Nicklaus Design includes large subtle greens and fairways lined with tall sea pines and splashes of colorful wildflowers.
"Riverton Pointe is a great championship course, that will test all facets of your game," said head coach Stephen Bailey. "It has some good length and challenging green complexes that place a premium on accurate iron play."
THE LINEUP:
Nos. 1-5: Nicolás Evangelio, Max Lyons, Tyler Leach, Josh Robinson, Bhoom Sima-Aree
The Golden Eagles enter the conference championships as the top seed. MU leads the league in average score (286.48) and score vs. par (1.38).
Marquette is the only team in the BIG EAST to have five individuals ranked inside the top 20 in the conference on GolfStat. All five of MU's entrants rank inside the top-15 and three inside the top 10.
Nicolás Evangelio is the top returner from last year's BIG EAST Championships at Callaway Resort's Mountain View Course, shooting an even par 216 (74-72-70) to finish tied for 10th. Evangelio enters as Marquette's highest-ranked golfer in the conference at No. 4 with an average score of 71.93.
Evangelio has had a career year with career bests in rounds of par or better (14), rounds in the 60s (7), average score and score vs. par (0.66). He also shot a 54-hole career-low 11-under par 205 (68-65-72) at the Tiger Collegiate Invitational on April 11.
Max Lyons and Tyler Leach both rank inside the top 10 in the conference with average scores of 72.28 and 72.34, respectively. Lyons Paced the Golden Eagles in their victory at the Redhawk Invitational last time out with a 4-over 217 (71-72-74) to place eighth individually.
Leach has been a staple of the MU lineup the past five seasons and was a first-team All-BIG EAST selection last season. The Marquette veteran finished in MU's top two in five of nine events he competed during 2022-23.
Josh Robinson has put together some top scores for MU during the spring season. Robinson shot a career-low 6-under par 210 in back-to-back tournaments to begin the spring season. Robinson's 6-under par (70-69-71) performance at the Puerto Rico Classic earned him his first career BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week honors.
MU's No. 5, Bhoom Sima-Aree was the Golden Eagle's second finisher in the team's last two events. Sima-Aree turned in a 54-hole career-low 8-under 208 (66-72-70) at the Tiger Collegiate Invitational on April 11.
