Lyons leads MU on opening day at Gopher Invitational

INDEPENDENCE, Minnesota – Junior Max Lyons posted a 3-under 139 (69-70) to lead the Marquette University men's golf team through the first two rounds of the the Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club on Sunday.

As a team, the Golden Eagles are tied for eighth at 2-over par, but just four strokes out of third place. UNC-Wilmington and Northwestern are tied for the event lead at 5-under.

Lyons fired a 2-under 69 in the opening round with three birdies and a single bogey on the par-3 10th hole. Lyons birdied the par-5 ninth hole before the turn and closed his first round with birdies on the 13th and 17th. It was more of the same from Lyons in the second round with three birdies on his final seven holes.

Graduate student Bhoom Sima-Aree (-1, 70-71—141) was tied for seventh after the first round with a 1-under 70, including a team-best four birdies. He also carded an even par 71 in the second round with another four birdies.

Aidan Lafferty (+3, 73-72—145) and Patrick Adler (+3, 74-71—145) are both tied at 3-over through 36 holes.

Monday's final round begins at 7:15 am Central time off the first and 10th tees.

The Gopher Invitational has called Windsong Farm Golf Club home for the past 10 years. Windsong Farm is consistently rated among Minnesota's top golf courses, with additional national recognition as one of the top modern courses in the nation. Originally created by John Fought and Minnesota native Tom Lehman, the course's breathtaking views and unmatched conditions contribute to the ultimate golfing experience. Opened in 2003, Windsong measures 7,380 yards and has a par 71 layout.

Three Golden Eagles also competed as individuals this weekend at the Minnesota Golf Classic at Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain, Minnesota.

Sophomore Will Hemauer led the way for MU with a 1-under 215 through 54 holes, which included a 1-under 71 in the second round on Sunday morning and a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. His final two rounds are the lowest scores of his college career.
