
Golf places ninth at Windon Memorial Classic

Aidan Lafferty posted a 2-under 69 in the final round to notch another top-20 finish

NORTHFIELD, Illinois – The Marquette University men's golf team fired an even-par 284 in Tuesday's final round at the 2023 Windon Memorial Classic at Sunset Ridge Country Club to place ninth out of 15 teams with an 11-under 841 (282-275-284).
Graduate student Aidan Lafferty led the way for the Golden Eagles, firing a 2-under 69 on Tuesday to place in a tie for 19th with a 5-under 208 (70-69-69). The Downers Grove, Illinois native recorded three birdies on his first five holes after starting the morning on the back nine, and finished his day with a team-high five birdies.
Lafferty continued his early season ascent for the Golden Eagles, which has seen him jump up the lineup with three top-two team finishes over the season's first three events. He has now shot under par in each of his last four rounds and his 71.56 scoring average this season is tied with Max Lyons for the team lead.Â
Lyons, playing as MU's No. 1, fired the team's best opening round with a 3-under 68 and ended the event with an even par 214 (68-72-74).
Bhoom Sima-Aree joined Lafferty under par on Tuesday with a 1-under 70, and tied for 24th overall at 4-under (72-67-70—209).
Rain pushed back the start of the third round by 20 minutes this morning and affected the early portion on Monday's opening round. After the rain subsided on Monday, the Golden Eagles shot a 9-under 274 in the second round, which saw low scores from all 15 teams
Purdue won the event with a tournament-record 38-under 814, while Herman Sekne shattered the individual tournament record of 205 by eight strokes with a 16-under 197 to claim medalist honors.
The Golden Eagles finished ahead of regional competitors Minnesota, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Michigan State at the event.
