Golden Eagles finish sixth at Marquette Intercollegiate

ERIN, Wisconsin – The Marquette University men's golf team placed sixth in the 2023 Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills Golf Course in its first event of the year.

Junior Max Lyons led the way for the Golden Eagles with a 2-under 70 in Tuesday's final round and tied for 12th overall with a 3-over 219 for the event (72-77-70).

Graduate students Aidan Lafferty (5-over 221) and Josh Robinson (6-over 222) followed Lyons in a tie for 17th and 19th place, respectively. Lafferty shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, as did classmate Bhoom Sima-Aree.

Junior Patrick Adler and freshman Mason Schmidtke led MU's contingent competing as individuals in a tie for 22nd overall.

Chattanooga (11-over) claimed the team title by three strokes over the University of California (14-over) with by shooting 3-under-par on Tuesday. Chattanooga's Sam Espinosa-Trueba and Cal's Eric Lee, competing as an individual, earned medalist honors at 3-under for the tournament.

MARQUETTE INTERCOLLEGIATE AT ERIN HILLS

This fall marks the 10th anniversary of the event, which was first held as the Erin Hills Intercollegiate on Oct. 6-8, 2013.
The tournament is being held at Erin Hills for the eighth time (there was no competition in 2020 due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic and Milwaukee Country Club served as host in 2016 and 2022).
In Monday's second round, Leo Metzger of UC Davis carded a hole-in-one on the par-4 15th hole.
Full field (Final 2022-23 Golfstat Team Ranking): Marquette (61), Augusta (130), Cal (52), Chattanooga (41), Cincinnati (42), Penn State (97) Dayton (151), Nevada (148), Purdue (47), Texas A&M (15), UC Davis (123), Wisconsin (71).
Six programs are making their first appearance in the event this year: Cal, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Dayton, Penn State and Nevada.
In addition to the host Golden Eagles, Wisconsin has played in every Marquette Intercollegiate, while UC Davis and Purdue are making their sixth and fifth appearances, respectively.
This year's field includes previous tournament champions Texas A&M (2017 and 2021) and Purdue (2019).
MU tied for second with Northwestern at the Marquette Intercollegiate last fall at Milwaukee Country Club, while Auburn won the event. Sima-Areee was MU's top finisher in a tie for eighth with a 3-over 213 (69-71-73) and Iowa State's Luke Gutschewski was the medalist with a 6-under 204, including a 4-under 66 in the final round.
The tournament was last played at Erin Hills in Sept. 2021 with record-setting performances turned in throughout. Texas A&M set a new tournament record with a 32-under par 832, while USF, Purdue, ETSU and Kansas all bettered Stanford's previous event record of 13-under par from 2013. A&M's Walker Lee shot a 14-under 202 (66-67-69) to claim medalist honors and four others recorded scores of at least 10-under. Lee's teammate Michael Heidelbaugh shot an 8-under 64 in the second round to establish a new 18-hole low score for the event.
