MILWAUKEE – Defenseman Mason Woodward set the Marquette University men's lacrosse ground ball record as the Golden Eagles defeated Lindenwood, 16-5, on Friday afternoon in their home opener at Valley Fields.
Reigning BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week Carsen Brandt paced the Golden Eagles (2-0) with his first career hat trick and three assists, while Luke Blanc had his second hat trick in as many games.
Marquette jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, eventually building a 13-2 advantage late in the third quarter before MU inserted its reserves to start the fourth.
Lindenwood (0-1) was led by two goals from Noah Wehrman, while goalie AJ Preachuk made 14 saves in net.
MU goalie Caleb Creasor, who was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, made six saves in 45 minutes and allowed just three goals.

NOTABLE:
- Woodward now has 219 career ground balls and passed Marquette all-time ground ball leader Liam Byrnes (218) for the program record.
- Woodward tied Byrnes on a ground ball with two seconds remaining in the first half and broke the record with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter on his final ground ball of the day.
- Woodward's 69 caused turnovers are second to Byrnes (102) in team history.
- Junior attackman Bobby O'Grady is currently second in program history with 92 career goals and fifth in points with 103.
- Cowan is third at MU in both points (120) and goals (91).
- Marquette hosted Lindenwood for the program's first NCAA Division I contest in last season's opener at Valley Fields on Feb. 4. The Golden Eagles earned a 17-2 win behind six goals from O'Grady and five points from Jake Stegman (2g, 3a).
- O'Grady and Cowan, each with 92 career goals, are within striking distance of Ryan McNamara's program record of 102.
- Stegman had two assists on Friday and has 61 career assists, just two behind Conor Gately's MU record of 63.
- Brandt is now up to five goals and eight points through two games played in his career. He scored twice in his NCAA debut on Feb. 3 at Air Force.
- MU freshmen LSMs Brad Johnson and Colin Sims, midfielders Zach Hulme and Kaiden Kohls, along with attackman Andrew Kohlbrenner, made their career debuts on Saturday.
