URBANA, Illinois ā Graduate student Aidan LaffertyĀ led the Marquette University men's golf team on the first day of action at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate with a 6-over 148 through 36 holes at Atkins Golf Club.
Lafferty carded consecutive rounds of 3-over 74 to lead the MU contingent, including four birdies in the day's second round. He had two birdies in the opening round on holes three and nine.
Marquette is seventh out of 12 teams in the event, which tournament-host Illinois leads heading into Sunday's final round.
Will Hemauer and Max Lyons each posted a team-best three birdies in the opening round. After beginning the day on the back nine, HemauerĀ birdied the par-5 first and par-4 third holes after making the turn at even-par.
The native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is in the lineup for the second time in his career after impressive performances in team qualifying leading up to this week's event.
The courseĀ plays as a par 71 at 7,503 yards this week and Sunday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Central timeĀ following a 30-minute frost delay. The Golden EaglesĀ are set to begin the third round at 8:48 a.m. on the 10th tee and are paired with UC San Diego andĀ BIG EAST Conference counterpart Butler.
