Golf heads to Purdue Fall Invitational at Kampen-Cosler Course

The Golden Eagles will play their second fall event on Sunday-Monday

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team heads to its second event of the year, the Purdue Fall Invitational, on Sunday, Sept. 22 and Monday, Sept. 23 at the Kampen-Cosler Course in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Live scoring of the event will be available through Golfstat, as will scoring for a separate individual event at the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
THE EVENT
The Purdue Fall Invitational is in its fourth season of competition and third at the Kampen-Cosler Course. MU competed in the first year of the event in 2021 and placed eighth out of 12 teams with an 18-over 882. Former MU All-American Hunter Eichhorn led the Golden Eagles at the event with a 2-over 218, while then-freshman Max Lyons was MU's runner up with a 4-over 220 in a tie for 28th place.
The field at the Purdue Fall Invitational is comprised of 15 teams including the host Boilermakers, Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Southern Illinois, Toledo, Wisconsin, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa, Northern Illinois, VCU, Western Kentucky, Marquette, Butler, Purdue Fort Wayne.

At the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, the Kampen-Cosler Course, a Pete Dye design, is an 18-hole, links-style, par-72 championship golf course featuring large bent-grass greens, fairways and tees. The layout presents a challenge for golfers of all abilities with vast sand bunkers, native grasslands, ponds and a natural celery bog. Kampen-Cosler offers five sets of tees with the championship tees playing over 7,400 yards and the forward tees playing at 5,300 yards.
Kampen-Cosler is rated one of the top collegiate courses in the nation and has been awarded 4.5 stars on Golf Digest's "Places to Play." Kampen-Cosler receives high marks as it is ranked as one of the most difficult golf courses in Indiana.

Individual (at Ackerman-Allen): Will Hemauer, Mason Schmidtke
Junior transfer Johan Widal will lead the MU lineup for the first time in his career, while freshman Vincent Cervantes slots into the No. 2 spot behind him. Widal tied for third among the MU contingent at the Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm to open the year on Sept. 8-9. He carded an 8-over 221 for the week with consecutive 2-over 73s in his first two rounds.
Cervantes and sophomore Ryan Banas each recorded MU's low rounds of the opening tournament with 1-under 70s. Cervantes did so in his first collegiate round, while Banas recorded the mark in the second round at Windsong Farm.
Patrick Adler, MU's No. 5 this week, was one of four Golden Eagles to finish in the top 35 of the 80-player field in the Gopher Invitational and led MU with a 4-over 217. He shot an even-par 71 in the final round to jump six spots up the individual leaderboard to pace a MU contingent for the first time in his career in a tie for 17th place.
Marquette received counting scores at the event from all five members of its lineup and senior Max Lyons placed second on the squad with a 5-over 217, just one stroke behind Adler, in a tie for 19th.
Marquette (+18) finished sixth in a very competitive field, just two strokes behind fourth-place Iowa and one behind fifth-place Rutgers. At the event, MU bettered teams that combined for eight NCAA regional appearances in the last two NCAA tournaments — Furman (+22), New Mexico (+24), Baylor (+31), West Virginia (+36), Georgia Southern (+48) and NIU (+59).
