Schumar is among the nation's assist leaders in women's lacrosse
MILWAUKEE - Women's lacrosse attacker Mary Schumar is the Blue & Gold Student-Athlete of the Month for April 2023, as chosen by Marquette Athletics' Academics and Student Programs staff. Â
Schumar is a senior on the women's lacrosse team, majoring in mechanical engineering. She also has a focus to computer science and information technology, and will pursue her master's degree in an information systems program after graduation. Schumar has earned Dean's List, AD Honor Roll, and BIG EAST All-Academic every semester of her undergraduate career. She has been a mentor for other STEM students, and is a member of Marquette's Society of Women Engineers. She has interned at Rockwell Automation in Milwaukee, and at GenTex in Michigan. Fun fact about Mary: she designed and programmed a bar app to help patrons with online drink ordering; it is in the user-interface stage, nearing full adoption.
On the field, Schumar has helped the Golden Eagles off to a program-best start through 10 games and enters the month of April as the NCAA Division I leader in assists per game with 4.00 per contest. She's paced the nation's highest-scoring offense in 2023 and is set to break the program's single season assist mark of 43, which she reached last season. She's also on the verge of breaking MU's career assist mark of 100 set by Claire Costanza (2013-17) - Schumar enters April with 86 career assists in just 48 games.
